Adolph E. Deiter

July 16, 1904 — March 6, 2006

Adolph Elmer Deiter was born July 16, 1904 to Lorenz William and Anna Maria VanLeewen Deiter at the farm home near Hunter, Kansas.
"Dutch", as he was known by all, attended Sunday School and church as a child in the old Grace Chapel Methodist Church located two miles east of Hunter. In later years, he attended the same church after it had been moved into town. He received his education at the O.K. District No. 94 country school and graduated from Hunter High School in the Class of 1925. He later attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas for a short while.
On October 3, 1931, he was married to Verna Warrensburg at Seneca, Kansas. Although they had no children of their own, Dutch and Verna shared their home through the years with young people; they enjoyed keeping boys and girls from the farm who needed a place to stay when inclement weather prevented their return to the farmstead. They also gave shelter to young men who found work in Hunter, yet had no place to live. Dutch and Verna had the privilege of living a long and happy life together, and in October of 1982 celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Dutch always had a soft spot for young people; in his younger days, the Deiter home or a nearby vacant lot was the scene of many football and basketball games, all with him being in the middle of the fun. He always made time to share his time and interests with nieces and nephews and other youth from the community.
In May, 1929, he began working for the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad as a trackman and remained faithful to his work until his retirement in 1969.
Dutch loved his home in the Hunter community. Although he was offered promotions on the railroad, he chose to stay with his original job. He knew that taking a promotion meant traveling and being away from his beloved wife and hometown. He loved the simple things in life. He was known to often have said that he never hoped to be a rich man. He only asked for a roof over his head, a warm fire, good friends and good neighbors. He was happy and content with what God provided; although he did not talk much about religion, his strong Christian belief was evidenced in the way he lived his daily life. He was a kind, good natured, and honest man, and his quiet, humble, and unassuming ways won him many friends.
After his retirement from the railroad, he spent many happy hours pursing his hobbies of fishing, playing cards and gardening. In addition, he thoroughly enjoyed watching all kind of ball games on television. He loved everything about nature; one of his main interests as he grew older was feeding and watching wild birds. Even into his 90's, Dutch could be seen taking daily walks through Hunter, visiting with his friends and enjoying the outdoors. He was privileged to celebrate his 101st birthday in July, 2005.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Lorenz, Charlie, Harold, Elmer, and Walter Deiter, and his sisters Minnie Stussy and Alma Engling Minear. Dutch went to be with his beloved wife Verna late Monday evening, March 6, 2006 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.
Survivors are a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 9, 2006 at the Hunter United Methodist Church with Pastor Marion Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Union Cemetery at Hunter. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
