Alec Greiner Waggoner passed away Sunday, October 26, at Syracuse University Hospital in Syracuse, New York.
He was born February 7, 1985, in Beloit, Kansas to Rex and Pat Waggoner. After graduating from Beloit High in 2003, Alec studied at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he earned his Bachelors degree in Geology and graduated with Honors in 2007.
At the time of his death, he was a graduate student at Syracuse University, where he was researching thermochronology and tectonics. He had recently returned from a month-long research trip to Papua New Guinea and was due to receive his Masters degree in Geochronology this spring. Alec had been offered a position in the PhD program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and had planned to accept.
Alec had a unique, unbridled passion for life and loved traveling, rock climbing, bouldering, hiking, backpacking, riding bicycles and generally anything associated with the outdoors. He was also a highly intelligent individual who constantly strived to quench his thirst for knowledge.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his Brother, Egan Waggoner of New York City, his Grandfather, Harold "Sass" Greiner, as well as many, many friends whose lives he touched. Additional family members include an uncle, Doug Greiner, his wife Mary and 5 cousins, Christina, Molly, Miranda, Savannah and Devin Greiner.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM Friday, October 31, 2008 at his family home, 223 N. Walnut in Beloit. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday and from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials should be given to the Alec Waggoner Scholarship Fund.
