Arvid Deane McFarland was born June 23, 1924 to William Ralph and Dorothy Belle Heller McFarland on a farm near Glen Elder, Kansas. He passed away Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Presbyterian Manor in Salina, Kansas at the age of 88 years.
Arvid graduated from Athens High School and continued his education at Westmar University in Lamar, Iowa. He received his Masters degree in Education from Kansas State University and was an ardent KSU Football and Basketball Fan (Go Cats).
On May 15, 1949 he married Geneva Neifert in Glen Elder. Three sons Larry, Steve and Kevin were born to this union.
Arvid was a teacher, coach, and principal. He worked in several schools in Kansas—Woodbine, Beloit, Osborne, and Grainfield before retiring in 1987 at which time he and Geneva moved to Salina.
He was a loving husband and father, and a good friend. He loved to visit his family and watch his grandsons in their various activities. He even learned a bit about soccer-he already knew quite a bit about football and baseball having played and coached. He also loved to visit with old friends.
Arvid was also a golfer, although not very good. He greatly enjoyed playing golf with his three sons, always known as The McFarland Open.
He was a member of the Church of the Cross United Methodist Church, the Lions Club where he served as an officer for many years. He was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Lodge #145 AF&AM.
His parents, one son Larry McFarland, and his wife Geneva preceded him in death.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his two sons Steve McFarland and wife Connie of Plano, Texas, Kevin McFarland and wife Cinnie of Topeka, Kansas; one sister Berta Bleam and husband Bob of Osborne, Kansas; five grandsons Brian, Mark, Matthew, Scott and Allan; three granddaughters-in-law; six great grandchildren and many friends.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the Glen Elder United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Salina Presbyterian Manor. Visitation will be from 9 AM until 8 PM Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
