Ashlea Betts Smith

June 18, 1986 — March 8, 2013

Ashlea Rhea Betts Smith, 26, was born June 18, 1986 in Beloit, KS to Layne and Kristine Betts Smith. She left this life March 8, 2013 at KUMC, resting peacefully in the loving arms of her Mom and Dad after complications during surgery.
Ashlea was a happy, strong-willed little girl. Even though having brain and spinal cord cancer at age three and strokes at four and a half that took her eyesight and ability to walk, none of which held her back. She was a 23 year cancer survivor and participated in Relay for Life since 2002.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her favorite movies, The Wizard of Oz and Stand By Me. In 2004, she was able to go to Disney World through the Make A Wish Foundation. She graduated BJSHS in 2006, then started going to Angel Square with her friends, Amy Hawkinson, Kathy Ellis, Stephanie Pate, Kylee McBride, Jennie File, RaeLynn Schmidt, and John Wendell. Although Ashlea's size was small, her heart was big, and she touched the hearts of many people around her.
Ashlea is survived by her Mom and Dad; her brothers Brandon, Mat, and Eric Smith; Aunts Cheryl Betts, Rhonda Hula, Sue (Lawrence) Wenthe, and Minda (Brian) Huiting; Uncles Jim (Kay) Betts, John Betts, Tom (Donna) Smith; a special family friend, John Gildersleeve; and many cousins.
Ashlea is preceded in death by her Grandparents, James and Vera Betts, and Willis and Rose Smith; Aunts Susan Leighton and Virginia Henderson; Uncle Ron Betts; and cousins, Gwen and Sammy Henderson, and Sebastian Roubedeaux.

From Ashlea's younger big brother Brandon:
She fought so hard her whole life, but she grew tired. I remember when I was a kid in school, I had a homework assignment about who I look up to the most, and I picked Stone Cold Steve Austin. Though now I must respectfully withdrawal that answer. No matter who has done what, what accomplishment any athlete, politician, or anyone else achieved, Ashlea beats them all. I love you sissy.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Friday, March 15 at the Beloit First Christian Church followed by burial in the Osborne Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Thursday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Family Expense Fund or the Relay for Life.
