Barbara Jane Smith Harrison, 93, of Beloit, Kansas, passed away on October 29, 2013, at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas. She was born to Hylas Charles Smith and Marietta Belle Lawson on January 31, 1920, in Fort Duchesne, Utah, on the Uintah-Ouray Reservation, where her father was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
She spent her early childhood years in Roosevelt, Utah, and in southwestern Colorado. In the 1930's her family moved to Beloit, for her mother's health. Barbara was the sixth of seven children. She was predeceased by siblings Naomi Shawver, Eugenia Smith, Sidney Smith, Elizabeth Vernon, and Hylas Smith. Her younger brother, John Smith, of Independence, California, survives.
She graduated Beloit High School in 1937. While in high school, she met her future husband, Robert Kendall Harrison from Glen Elder, Kansas. Both graduated Kansas Wesleyan University in 1941.
Barbara began her teaching career at Simpson High School. On her birthday in 1942, she married Robert. In 1945, Barbara moved with Robert and their sons John and Jim to Beloit, Kansas where Barbara gave birth to Jerry, Joe, and Jane.
With five children Barbara kept busy with PTA, Cub Scouts, 4-H, and the Methodist church. When her youngest child reached school-age, she took on the role of kindergarten teacher.
Barbara and Robert retired in 1982 and traveled to Alaska, Europe, China, Hawaii, and Israel. In 1985 Barbara served on the City Council, filling out an unexpired term. She volunteered with the American Cancer Society, the United Methodist Women, Federated Quest Club, the Bloodmobile, and the CROP Walk.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents and her husband, who passed away in 1999. She is survived by her five children: John Robert and his wife Janie of Conway, Arkansas; James Charles of Seattle, Washington; Jerry Lee and his wife Julie of Beloit, Kansas; Joseph Hylas and his wife Sheila of Beloit, Kansas; and Jane Ann and her husband Bob Parker of Lenexa, Kansas; twelve grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM Friday, November 1 at the Beloit First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Thursday at the McDonald Funeral Home, with the family present from 4-6 PM. Memorials may be given to the Church, Solomon Valley Hospice, or the USD 273 Endowment Fund.
