Barbara Elizabeth Powell, Salina, KS died Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Salina Regional Health Center, at the age of 80.
Barbara was born August 22, 1927, to Pearl and Walter Ridenour at the farmstead near Asherville, KS, the youngest of eight children. She attended Asherville grade and high school, participating in girls basketball led by teacher and coach, Harold Taylor.
She was united in marriage to William J. (Dub) Powell, Jr, on October 21, 1944. To this union were born two children, Shareon and Charles (Chuck) Powell. Barbara worked in retail much of her life, including Eldringhoffs, J. M. McDonalds and Town & Country in Beloit, as well as being co-owner and bookkeeper for Powell Builders for 30 years. She and Dub spent many enjoyable weekends and trips with their travel trailer friends, the Holiday Ramblers. Her grandchildren were very precious to her and gave her many hours of enjoyment.
After Dub's death in 1987, Barbara moved to Salina where she worked at Klines, Vernon Jewelers and Key Rexall and was a volunteer at the Salina Regional Hospital. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Beloit, the First United Methodist Church, Salina, and the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries in both Beloit and Salina.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Shareon and husband, Ken White, her son Chuck and wife, Barb, seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, one brother Walter (Junior) Ridenour, Fountain, CO, sister-in-laws, Ceone Wrench, ElDorado, and Pat Grabast, Osborne, and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a beloved step-father Robert (Grandpa Bob) McQueen, sisters, Vurble Underhill, Opal Brott, Esther Stackhouse, Eller Sellers, Frances Davis and brother, Orval (Bud) Ridenour.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the McDonald Funeral Home followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or the Beloit First United Methodist Church.
