Bernetta M. Askins

Bernetta Mary Vossman Askins was born on January 21, 1919 on the Vossman family farm 5 miles east of Beloit, Kansas to William and Mary E. (Mayme) Heiman Vossman and departed this life November 7, 2008.

She attended rural grade school No. 3, east of Beloit, and graduated from St. John's High School in 1936. After graduation, she was employed at Hamburg's General Merchandise Store until 1938 when she entered nurses trading at St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating in 1941. She joined the Army Nurse Corp as a 2nd Lieutenant in April of 1942 and was stationed at Camp Chaffee, AR., where she met and later married Lt. John Kenneth Askins of Duncan, OK on October 7, 1942. After World War II, they lived for a short period in Duncan, OK, and then moved to Beloit, KS in 1946 where they made their home. To this union three children were born David, Linda, and Gregory Askins.

After her husband died on November 3, 1971, she returned to her profession as a Registered Nurse at Mitchell County Hospital until she retired in 1988. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, St. John's Ladies Guild and also the Kansas State Nurses Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents William and Mary E. Vossman; son David Askins, Topeka, KS; brothers Edwin Vossman and wife Betty of Beloit, KS, Gerald Vossman of Wichita, KS; sister Helen Vossman Carrico and husband Paul Carrico of Beloit, KS; grandson Deric Askins of Topeka, KS; son-in-law Timothy Boudewyns of Portsmouth, RI; brothers-in-law Alton Askins of Dallas, TX, Harold Askins of Duncan, OK, Hugh Lipscomb of Duncan, OK; sisters-in-law Robbie Lou Askins Lipscomb of Duncan, OK and Donna Askins of Duncan, OK.

Survivors include her daughter Linda Askins Boudewyns of Portsmouth, RI; son Gregory Askins and wife Peggy Sahlfeld Askins of Hays, KS; daughter-in-law Barbara Potter Askins of Topeka, KS; sisters-in-law Irene Vossman of Tulsa, OK, Pat Askins of Waco, TX; nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Joseph Kieffer on Wedesday, November 12, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. John's Memorial Trust Fund. Friends may call from 2:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. The Parish Vigil & Rosary service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
