Bonnie Lee (Borger) Slate was born on December 7, 1927, in Jewell County, KS near Mt. Carmel, to William (Billy) Borger and Jennie Kuiken Borger. She was one of eight children: Nola, Eldon, Kenneth, Thelma, Jennings, Arleen, Bonnie, and Dwight. Bonnie went to be with her Lord on Sunday evening, January 31, 2016, in Beloit, Kansas.
Bonnie attended grade school in Jewell County in the Liberty and Limestone Districts. She attended high school at Athens for one year and graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1946. Bonnie taught school one year in Mitchell County at Excelsior District. The rest of her working career was spent as a school cook in Athens and Glen Elder Schools.
Bonnie and Virgil were married and purchased the Borger family farm in Jewell County, where they spent most of their lives before moving to Glen Elder in 1991. From this union of 67 years, three children were born: Jim, Shirley, and Steve.
The love of her life was Virgil; but, she also had a deep love of God and for her family and friends. She enjoyed going to auctions with Virgil and had her own collections. A very meaningful part of Bonnie's life was her role as a prayer warrior with her friends from the Glen Elder Christian Church. She always had a kind word for everyone she met.
Preceding her in death were her husband Virgil, her parents Billy and Jennie Kuiken, six siblings, her granddaughter Janna Lisa Slate, grandson Jarod Anthony Slate, granddaughter-in-law Jennifer Mullin Wright.
Surviving family members include: Dwight and Joyce Borger, sister-in-laws Dorothy Borger and Veva Banks, Jim and Janis Slate of Glen Elder, KS; Shirley and Leon Wright of Claremore, OK; Steve and Sharon Slate of Stockton, KS; twelve grandchildren: Brian Slate, Craig and Kyla Slate, Mike Slate, Eric and Allyson Wright, Andy and Ann Wright, Joshua Slate, Joel Slate, and Joseph Slate and fiancé Caitlin Boden; and great grandson Hudson Wright.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Friday, February 5 at the Glen Elder Christian Church followed by burial in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday with family present at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Church.
