Calvin Doyle Schultz, the youngest child of Henry and Anna Boeskool Schultz, was born on the family farm 6 miles north of Cawker City in Jewell County in Erving Township. The date was January 11, 1924, a cold and snowy day he was told. He had 4 older sisters and one older brother. He attended Liberty Country School, which was about 3 miles from home, sometimes walking and later riding horseback. After graduating from Liberty, he attended Athens Rural High School for 2 years. He died early Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 26 days.
Calvin worked on the family farm, later helping farmers in the neighborhood with their work besides working at home. In partnership with his brother Carl, they purchased their grandparents' farm 2 miles from home. There they raised corn, wheat, and registered Hereford cattle. For several years they farmed with horses buying their first tractor in 1950. They practiced soil conservation on all their land building some of the first terraces in the neighborhood. Calvin loved all animals especially horses and cats. He stopped hunting in later years, preferring to see wild animals and pheasants live freely on his land.
He belonged to several humane organizations and the Post Rock Humane Society. He also sponsored several underprivileged children from different countries.
At the age of 10 years old, Calvin was baptized and joined the Baptist Church in Cawker City, where he remained a faithful member for over 80 years, serving in different offices of the church.
Calvin read many books in his lifetime. He especially liked Westerns by Zane Gray. He also liked Civil War history. Calvin liked baseball and basketball. He especially enjoyed pitching horseshoes, where he had a special knack for throwing ringers. He won many ribbons and trophies over the years.
On August 30, 2003, he married Margery Eberle Briney. He was 79 years old at the time and always said "better late than never"! In doing so, he not only got a wife, but 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren whom he loved very much. After his marriage to Marge, he mostly retired from farming and moved to town, leaving the place he was born and had lived for almost 80 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Mildred and Matha, who never married and were teachers, teaching for almost 40 years, Lola who married Paul Koster and had 2 boys, Ruth who married Jack Koster and had one boy and three girls; brother Carl in Beloit; and niece Brenda Jo Dean.
He is survived by his wife Marge; 3 daughters, Beccy (Mike) Isom, Robi (Jerry) Clark, and Shelly (Michael) Burhans; 7 grandchildren, Julie (Dan) Molzahn, Michelle (Travis) Elliott, Tracy (Valerie) Clark, Garry (Lindsey) Clark, Jami (Eric) Knutson, Travis (Genny) Burhans, Micheala (Cody) McGuire; 11 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Ron (Marsha) Koster, Randy (Chris) Koster, Marla (Allan) Fisher, Deb (John) Thomas, Jerry Dean, and John Koster and special friend Val.
