Carl Martin Windhorst, the son of Herman "Stormy" and Elma Butler Windhorst, was born May 16, 1923, at Manhattan, Kansas. He died March 5, 2009, at the Salina Regional Health Center at the age of 85 years.
Carl grew up on the farm and attended country school and Glasco High School. He served in the US Army as a medic during World War II in the European Theater of operations.
On April 5, 1952, he was united in marriage with Dorothy J. Spicher at Glasco. They were the parents of five children, Elaine and Jane who died at birth; Kelvin, Karen and Karlton. The couple had been privileged to spend 54 years of married life together at the time of Dorothy's death in 2006.
Carl worked for many years as an equipment operator at the Natural Gas Pipeline of America and also operated the family farm. Carl was a collector and if anyone needed anything, he could usually find it in his garage. Family was very special to him and he especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Glasco Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Kelvin and wife, Anna of Minneapolis, Kansas, and Karlton and wife, Mandy of Sacramento, California; a daughter, Karen Griest and fiancé, Larry Smith of Glasco, Kansas; a sister, Dolores Launchbaugh and husband, Don of Norton, Kansas; grandchildren, Chad Windhorst, Cole Windhorst and wife, Kasey and their children, Trenton, Kensley and Skyler; Adam Griest; Koryn Murry and husband, Aaron and their son, Matthew and future son, Ayden; Aaron and Jamie Swaboda.
In addition to his wife and infant children, Carl was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charlie Windhorst; and a sister, Anna Windhorst.
Graveside Services will be at 10:30 AM Monday, at the Glasco Cemetery. Memorials may be given for the Glasco VFW. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Sunday at the Glasco Senior Center.
