Carman B. Thummel, the last surviving of four children born to Moses Bright and Laura Ethel Lennen Stout died early Tuesday morning, February 17, 2009 at Windsor Estates Nursing Home in Salina, Kansas at the age of 95 years.
She was born March 13, 1913 at Stillwater, Oklahoma and spent some of her childhood years in nearby Cleo Springs, Oklahoma. When she was about ten years old, her family moved to Cawker City, Kansas where she graduated from high school in about 1931.
Carman married Joseph P. "Joe" Thummel on April 16, 1940 at Tipton, Kansas and to this union was born one son Bob.
Carman and her family lived on a farm northwest of Tipton. There, she enjoyed taking an active role in the operations of the farm. She loved farm life and when the chores were finished, and the baking was done, she could be found in one of her favorite spots: her garden. Carman was a nurse's aide for several years at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital and at the Downs Nursing Center. Although her husband died in 1985, she remained on the farm until moving to Salina in about 2002.
A kind hearted, very practically minded person, Carman treasured the basics of life. Her family was her world; she loved being with them and in later years she delighted in going to their activities. Carman loved bowling, and having her grandchildren present made it all the better. Carman enjoyed traveling and taking long trips, well into her eighties.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Her husband Joe died in 1985. In addition, Carman was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Carl, Donald, and Gerald Stout, and a half brother Earl Vandenberg.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her son Bob Thummel and wife Cheri of Beloit; two grandchildren Rob Thummel and wife Cisley of Overland Park, Chad Thummel of Monahans, Texas; two great grandchildren Caroline and Joe Thummel; a host of many friends and other relatives.
