Cecilia I. Streit, better known as Ceal, was born on April 6, 1930 on the farm southwest of Scottsville, Kansas, one of 12 children of Fred and Lizzie Eilert. She died Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at the Nicol Home in Glasco, Kansas at the age of 91.
Ceal attended country school (STAR) for her elementary years before attending high school at St. John's in Beloit. Following high school, she attended Marymount College in Salina, where she had chemistry class from one of her sisters. After college, Ceal worked at the Beloit Gas Company. At that time, polio came to the forefront, and her employers allowed her to care for her sister-in-law, niece, and nephews that had contracted the disease in Salina. By the hand of God, she did not get the disease herself.
On May 29, 1954, Ceal married Philip Streit and moved to rural Tipton. To that union two boys were born, Richard and George.
Ceal worked at the Tipton State Bank, all the while keeping food on the table and helping with the many farm tasks. After 30 years at the bank, she decided to try another job. Since the boys were out of the house, she started working for the USPS. She started as a mail sorter in Salina, then took the task of Postmaster at Lebanon, Kansas and later in Cawker City. She retired in 2008 to enjoy life and spoil Phil more.
Phil and Ceal were married 62 good years. They had four grandchildren, and made every opportunity to spoil them. She was a great cook, and always had a table full of food for anyone that showed up unannounced.
In September, 2016, Phil passed away. Ceal stayed on the farm until moving to Hilltop Assisted Living in 2018, before eventually moving to the Nicol Home.
Ceal always had a smile to share, and given the opportunity, a great story to tell!
