Charles W. Fleming

April 28, 1921 — June 14, 2010

Charles William Fleming was born April 28, 1921 to Lyman David and Mary Blanche Steljes Fleming on a farm west of Stockton, Kansas. He departed this life of 89 years, 1 month, and 16 days early Monday, June 14, 2010 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit.

"Charlie", as everyone knew him, grew up in Stockton where he graduated from high school. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army.

Following his discharge, Charlie moved to Beloit, Kansas to partner with Orland Hazen in the operation of the Sunflower Express Trucking Company. His very keen ability to figure things out went to work, as while in a garage on the southeast side of Beloit, they began making their own version of the famous Diamond Packer farm implement, marking the birth of the agriculture icon Sunflower Manufacturing. Soon, they invented the flexible blade plow and patented their four section disc. One satisfied customer at a time, the business grew to the giant it now is. Orland died in 1969 and was succeeded by Milton Rasdall and Gerald Meier.
Ultimately the company was sold to Core Industries with Charlie retiring in 1981. After his retirement, Charlie pursued his many passions. Among these were attending auctions where he enjoyed his friends and collecting antique furniture. He also enjoyed being outdoors.

On March 21, 1948, he was united in marriage to Norma Ann Petterson at Concordia, Kansas. Three sons Chuck, Danny, and Steve were born to this union. They were privileged to celebrate 62 years of married life together.

A very outgoing, people loving person, Charlie had friends far and wide. A man of unquestioned honesty and integrity, Charlie believed in the value of a person's word and a handshake.

Charlie was a member of First United Methodist Church. In addition, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served as Post 6242 Commander and 6th District Commander. He was a member of the American Legion and also a life member of the Solomon Valley Eagles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Chuck Fleming and wife Carol; one grandson Brad Fleming; one brother Clarence. Charlie's sister Twila died just a few hours before him.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Norma of the home, sons Danny Fleming and wife Lynn, Steve Fleming all of Beloit, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of many relatives and friends.

Pastor Glenn Fogo will officate at the Funeral Services which will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, June 18, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church. Interment with military honors will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Fleming Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, Alzheimer's Foundation or the church.
