Charles Vernon Hartman was born September 13, 1923, to Carl H. & Florence A. Fuller Hartman on the farm his great-grandfather Charles Frederick Hartman homesteaded near Scottsville, Ks. He passed away Monday morning January 6, 2014 at Beloit Mitchell County Hospital at the age of 90. Charlie "Red" as he was known, grew up on the family farm and attended Fairview Grade School, graduated from Beloit High School and attended Fort Hays College for one year.
He enlisted in the army and two weeks later married his high school sweetheart Josephine File on September 13, 1942 before leaving for basic training in Kentucky. After his basic training he then spent two years in Europe during WW II. Upon his discharge in September 1945, he and his bride returned to the farm where they raised wheat, milo, hay, cattle & sheep. To this union of 71 years of marriage they raised three children, Larry, Linda & Joleen.
He was baptized at Fairview Christian Church then transferred to Beloit Christian Church when the country church closed. He was a life member of American Legion & Veteran of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge member, Charter member of Beloit Country Club and serviced on many other committee's.
Throughout their life together, the Hartmans enjoyed trips to the lake for fishing and boating, where friends and grandchildren would often join them. Charlie and Josie also traveled south to Texas for several years during the winter. Their shed was the venue to many family gatherings where family and close friends came to celebrate milestone birthdays and anniversaries. The grandchildren enjoyed horse riding and tractor rides when they were younger and all of the grandchildren have wonderful memories of the farm. Charlie was fortunate to be able to drive his tractor up until last year and will have a harvest of wheat this year.
Charlie enjoyed visiting with friends and family over coffee and preferably a sweet snack. He loved reading and sports and continued to enjoy these things by listening to books on tape and the radio or Josie as his commentator.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother and brother-in-law Duane File.
