Charles Raymond Hughes was born June 25, 1917 to Elighja and Pearl Harris Hughes at Clyde, Kansas. His life of 94 years, 4 months and 3 days ended Friday, October 28, 2011 at the Mitchell County Hospital Resident Care Center in Beloit, Kansas.
"Charlie", as everyone knew him, grew up in the Jamestown area and on December 23, 1940 was united in marriage with Louise Guipre at Belleville, Kansas. This happy union was blessed with Vernon, Karen, Judy, and Scott.
A jack of all trades and master of all, Charlie did a variety of things during his life and lived in a number of places. Perhaps he will be best remembered as "Mr. Simpson" as he served the Simpson community for many years in just about every capacity including Town Marshall and City Maintainer, retiring in 2008 at the age of 92. He also was very active in the Simpson Fire Department
Charlie was an avid hunter and fisherman and did not let his age intimidate him. He got his first deer at age 85 with his grandson Greg. He loved fishing at the lake with his kids, brothers and grandkids and you always knew when he got a good catch when he would say, "I got a tiger by the tail."
His closeness to the outdoors and nature let him enjoy the spiritual realm of life. He loved watching crops grow and enjoyed harvesting with friends, and he also was a true bird watcher. In later years, he enjoyed feeding and watching squirrels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons-in-law Charles Albert, Robert Kresin, Robert Stegmaier; a half brother Glenn Adams; brothers Billy, Vernon and Ed Hughes; sisters Edith Bisnette, Vera May Tieking, LaVena Larson, Nadine Griffiths, and a granddaughter Peggy Lou Hughes.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Louise of the home, children Vernon "Gene" Hughes and wife Tricia of Wellington, MO, Karen Stegmaier of Delphos, Judy Albert Kresin of Beloit, Scott Hughes and wife Marilyn of Glen Elder; one brother Dave Hughes and wife Alice of Clyde, one sister-in-law Martha Hughes of Downs; eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
