Charles King was born on January 25, 1930 on a farm east of Barnard, Kansas, the son of Vincent A. and Emily Willhite King. He died Friday, January 16, 2009 at his home in Glen Elder, Kansas at the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 22 days.
He grew up in the Barnard area and attended the King School before graduating from Barnard Grade School in 1944 and Barnard rural High School in 1948. He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. Later that year he joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War on Okinawa with the 437th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.
In 1951, he was married to Waltzie D. Yeatts, and to this union 4 children were born: Janet Lee, Sherri Lynn, Charles Mark, and Judy Ann.
In 1954, he attended college at Fort Hays State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and his Master's degree in Public School Administration. He retired after 28 years of educational service as a teacher and coach, a grade school and high school principal, and a year as Interim Superintendent. During his years of public service, Charles held memberships in KAESP-USA and KSHAA, the Masonic Lodge, and the VFW, and served as Scout Master for many years. He accepted Jesus, and was baptized in 1942.
Charles married a second time to Wanda Lee Speer Mead on January 24, 1981. They moved to Glen Elder, where Charles was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Clay, David, Abe, Vincent, Alan, and Robert; three sisters, Frances Marshall, Belle Powers, and Leah Valko; and three step children, Leland, Dennis, and Larry Mead.
Charles is survived by his wife, Wanda of the home; one son, Mark King and his wife Heide of Smith Center; three daughters, Sherri Nickelson and her husband Terry of Byers, Janet David and her husband John of Lenora, and Judy Dutton and her husband Chris of Clarksville, TN; four step children, Rex Mead, Sharon Thomas, Susan Schindler, and Arlyn Mead; two brothers, Bill King of Brownsfield, CO, and Don King of Fleming Island, FL; two sisters, Lillian Jones of Old Forge, PA, and Elizabeth Sprague of Lincoln, KS; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 22, at the Glen Elder United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to the church.
