Cheryl Betts

   Cheryl Ann Betts was born on August 24th, 1953 in Osborne, KS to Jim and Vera Betts. At that time there was no hospital for she was born in the nursing home! The house still stands as every time we passed by she would remind us! Cheryl went to live with her Lord and Savior on August 17th, 2026 at Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems in Beloit, KS, 1 week before her 73rd birthday.

   Cheryl grew up and attended school in Osborne Kansas. She waitressed at the diner in Osborne and loved to remind us every time passing the silos on hwy 9 that she helped build them! She obtained her GED and then went on to obtain a certificate in Licensed Practical Nursing at NCKTC in Beloit, KS. Her children can remember her being holed up in her bedroom studying and could hear her typing away on her typewriter. She worked as a Certified Nurses Aide in Long Term Care while going to school. Upon graduating she continued working there as an LPN. Cheryl loved her profession and took much pride in the fact that she worked hard to obtain her license. She became the 1st in her family to attend college and a 1st generation nurse having her two daughters, Maria and Andrea follow in her footsteps. We have many memories of hanging out at Long Term Care after school while mom worked. Cheryl worked with some fabulous ladies throughout the years and created many lifelong friendships along the way. In 2003, at the age of 50, Cheryl continued her education and graduated from Cloud County Community College with an Associates Degree in Nursing, obtaining her RN. Her career spanned geriatrics, acute care and her favorite, labor and delivery, helping bring many babies into the world!

   Growing up in Osbourne, Cheryl spent her childhood with her 6 brothers and sisters whom she mostly loved.... haha! often telling stories of times long gone, of her brothers Ronnie and John playing flying nun out the back window of the house, swimming in the old sand pit east of town, riding bikes, playing kick the can, watching the cows across the way at the sale barn with the Nevins kids, and swimming in the river - Cheryl loved Osborne and frequently took trips over with her kids to play at the river, drive by the old sand pit and reminisce.

   Cheryl loved to garden, growing tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers, lettuce all the makings for a salad along with her homemade mayonnaise salad dressing to bring it all together, or canning her cucumbers for all the kids to go crazy over devouring jar after jar of homemade pickles. Cheryl loved flowers, lilac bushes, iris's, peonies, but rose bushes the most. She always had a rose bush for each grandchild in her yard, a special color for each. After retiring Cheryl’s ability to care for her garden and home diminished, so being one to always have things taken care of Cheryl sold her house and moved to Sunny Slope, where she didn't have to worry any more about getting the grass cut or maintenance repairs on the home. She became part of a wonderful community at Sunny Slope, meeting friends there, new and old. 

   Cheryl would do anything for her family, we always knew when we tripped, moms house would be a place to call home until we could get back on our feet. No questions, that's just how it was. She adored her grandchildren and loved spending time with them. Upon her retirement she spent most of her money taking trips with us all, making precious memories along the way. We went to Branson, spending a day at Silver Dollar City, riding The Ducks, Rippleys, and a favorite was Dixie Stampede! Joesph especially was not excited, but the minute the horses came out his eyes lit up! A trip to Colorado Springs happened next, going to the Royal Gorge was the next best thing as moms dream was always to go to the Grand Canyon but never was able to go. Watching her grandchildren was where she was most content, even when they made her pull out her hair having all 5 at once! Grandmas house was a second home to Laney, Skylar, Joesph, Embrianna and Joslyn. Not surprising as growing up, the neighborhood kids always flocked to her. In her last several years at Sunny Slope she created a special bond with E.J. Davis, getting to meet his new little brother Mateo just this summer! 

   Cheryl always had faith in God, but it was just in the past 2 years after joining a bible study group where her understanding and commitment to Christ developed. Her and her daughter Maria attended bible study every Tuesday in the community room at Sunny Slope with Kristi Arasmith of Boost Ministries. It was there that she learned just who Jesus Christ is and how much she is loved as His daughter. The time spent there with that special group will always be cherished. 

   Preceeding her in death are parents James and Vera (Snyder) Betts, Brothers John and Ronald Betts; Sisters, Susan Leighton and Virginia Henderson; nephews Sebastian & Ian Roubedeaux, Christopher Alvord, and Joey Griffin. Nieces Gwen & Sammy Henderson and Ashlea Betts-Smith. Cheryl is survived by her brother Jim Betts of Esbon, KS; sister, Kris (Layne) Smith of Beloit, KS; Children, Gary (Christina) Sloggett of Pheonix Arizona, Maria (Shane) Martin of Beloit, KS and Andrea Cortez (Niklus) of Salina, KS. Grandchildren Laney, Skyler and Joesph Sloggett of Pheonix Arizona, Embrianna Fleming of Grandview Missouri, and Joslyn Sibley of Salina, KS.Cheryl will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

   Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM Wednesday, August 19 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home, followed by burial in the Osborne Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the service begins on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Family Expense Fund or Boost Ministries.
