Dean Keith Speaks was born on July 25, 1957 in Beloit, the son of David Wilson and Ercelle Elaine Davis Speaks. He died suddenly on Monday, March 8, 2010 at his home in Salina at the age of 52, one day before his mother died.
He grew up in Beloit, where he attended school and graduated from Beloit High School. He also lived in Hays and Texas, where he received his DJ training. He returned to Beloit, where he served as Emergency Management Director. Later he moved to Salina, where he served as the Deputy Director of Emergency Management for Saline County.
Dean was a happy-go-lucky person, and loved sports, especially fishing, golfing and hunting.
He was a member of several organizations including the State Incident Management Team, Kansas Emergency Management Association, Central Kansas Amateur Radio Club, Salina Masonic Lodge #60, ISIS Shrine Temple #5 of Salina, I.O.O.F, and the Sons of the Union Veterans. He was also very active in Boy Scouts and served as an advisor.
Dean was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Larry; and one sister, Diana.
He is survived by his sister, Kay Zachgo and her husband Joe of Sylvan Grove; two nieces, Carla Zachgo of Oklahoma City and Cynthia Wilkison of Denmark; one nephew, Jeremiah Zachgo of Lincoln; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at First Christian Church with Pastor Cliff Heagy officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Boy Scouts. Dean will lie in state along with his mother, Ercelle Speaks from 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
