Delwin L. Goheen of Beloit, Kan. passed away on Friday, December 3, 2010. Del was born on the 21st of June, 1924 in Jewell County, Kan. and was the second of four children born to Maurice and Clara Goheen of Downs, Kan.
After graduating from Downs High School, where he lettered in football, he served in the US Navy during World War II on the ship LSCL 73, including a station in Okinawa and missions on the Yangtze River in China.
Del married Donna Hofer of Downs, Kan. who preceded him in death.
He was employed for more than thirty years at the Youth Center at Beloit, retiring in 1988 as the head of the Maintenance Department and as one of their most valuable employees. Although Del contributed to the community in many ways, including volunteer fireman, emergency preparedness coordinator and guardsman in the Army National Guard until 1984, he is probably best known as a proficient marksman. In 1991, he was honored with the prestigious Distinguished Rifleman badge, number 944, and for many years taught Olympic athletes, hobbyists and hunter safety students in the arts of firearms and ballistics. He had also served as president of The Kansas State Rifle Association, and they created a trophy named in recognition of his accomplishments and support. Throughout most of his retirement years, he restored and refinished antique and collectible rifles as a craftsman in woodworking and engraving.
Del and Donna had five children: Don Goheen of Downs, Kan., Iris Goheen Dyer of Shawnee, Kan., Curtiss Goheen, deceased, of Las Vegas, Nev., Craig Goheen of Springfield, Va., and Brad Goheen of Beloit, Kan. Two sisters also survive him: Dorothea Lee Newbrey of Tucson, Ariz. and Della Lou King of Hollywood, S.C. as well as six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, December 9 at the Beloit First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Church or the VFW Post #6242.
