Dennis L. Martin

June 18, 1933 — February 10, 2009

Dennis Lee Martin was born June 18, 1933 to George R. and Irene Kathryn Downey at Glasco, Kansas. He departed this life of 75 years, 7 months, and 22 days late Tuesday morning, February 10, 2009 at Promise Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, Kansas.

"Denny," as everyone knew him, spent his entire life living in the Glasco community. He graduated from Glasco High School in the Class of 1951 and then served his country from 1953 to 1955 as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

On October 14, 1953, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Chavey at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Concordia. This union was blessed with two children Tony and Janelle.

Denny had a natural knack of fixing and repairing things and took correspondence courses to become an electrician. He founded Martin Electric in 1959, and from very humble beginnings, operated the business out of their house before moving his shop in the 1960s to the location of the former Dean's Mens Wear in downtown Glasco. His trademark was quick response to emergencies and leaving the jobsite cleaner than he found it. Besides electrical jobs, he did extensive plumbing, heating and air conditioning work. He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing as a hobby, and often he would incorporate his carpentry and woodworking skills to make the job go faster for the customer.

A congenial, easy going person, Denny had few enemies. He was a people person at heart who loved sports, having played all sports in his youth. He also played semi-pro baseball for the Glasco Eagles after high school. In the early years of his marriage to Dorothy, he was an official for high school and small college football and basketball games. One of his favorite activities was playing golf at the Glasco County Club. He was an avid reader, loved listening to music, and was a devoted fan of the KU Jayhawks.

Denny was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Glasco Country Club. He also belonged to the Concordia American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Dick and Darrel Martin.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Dorothy of the home; one daughter Janelle Martin of Lawrence, Kansas; one son Tony Martin of Glasco; one brother Donald Martin and wife Louise of Topeka, one sister Deanna Larzalere and husband Jack of Olathe; and a host of many friends.
