Don Cather

January 8, 1930 — February 14, 2007

Robert Donald "Don" Cather, a son of Gilbert and Freeda Moore Cather, was born January 8, 1930 at Morland, Kansas. He departed this life Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas at the age of 77 years, one month, and 6 days.

"Don", as everyone knew him, grew up in the Beloit area and was a graduate of Beloit High School. During the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

Following his discharge, he worked in the Libyan oil fields, and later he attended Oklahoma State Technical College at Okmulgee, Oklahoma where he met his wife, Mary Lynn House, and they were married in 1958. After their marriage, they moved to Texas and became the parents of four children Jack Allen, Jeffery Dean, Jill Elaine, and Jerry Joe Cather. In 1969 they moved to Anchorage, Alaska where he retired as Chief Mechanical Inspector for the State of Alaska in 1992.

Don possessed a true spirit of adventure. He enjoyed traveling the world and living in the Last Frontier. He was very involved with youth sports including the Arctic Winter Games. He devoted a great deal of time working with the youth, believing that keeping them involved with sports kept them out of trouble.

Throughout his life, Don made several trips back to Beloit. In 1999 he began restoring the home of his grandparents north of Beloit, moving into the house in 2002 when the project was complete.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Lynn, one son Jack Allen Cather, a brother Joe Cather, and a brother Max Cather who died during childhood.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his children Jeffery Dean Cather and wife Debra Lynn, Jill Elaine Rogers and husband Robert all of Anchorage, Alaska, Jerry Joe Cather and wife Jennifer of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; two grandchildren Derek Rogers and Rebecca Rogers.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Parker officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be given to the Mitchell County Historical Society.
