Donald Lee Anderson, Sr. was born December 16, 1924 to Gideon and Julia Hoel Anderson at Jewell, Kansas. He departed this life of 84 years, 5 months, and 6 days unexpectedly late Friday evening, May 22, 2009 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas.
Donald grew up in the Jewell community where he attended school. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army.
On March 5, 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Quinn. He was the father of five children Donald, Kathy, Teresa, William, and John.
Donald lived most of his life in the Spring Hill, Olathe, and Gardner, Kansas areas. He loved the outdoors and was a supervisor for the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Olathe. In February, 2002, he moved to his present home near Beloit.
A quiet, very introspective person, Donald enjoyed solitude. He loved music and for several years played guitar in the Road Runners band. He had a deep affinity for old country and polka music; he was a big fan of Big Joe's Polka Show on RFD TV. He also loved to sit on the porch and yodel. Donald enjoyed working outdoors and could be found mowing and tinkering with lawn mowers. He loved taking care of his pet horse Rocky.
His wife Mary died in 1994. In addition, his parents, an infant brother, a brother Frank Anderson, two sisters Ada Alice preceded him in death.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his children Donald L. Anderson, Jr. of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Kathy Cochran of Olathe, Teresa Scott and husband Robert of Beloit, William Anderson of Olathe, John David Anderson of Paola; five grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 10 AM until 8 PM Tuesday with the family receiving friends at the McDonald Funeral Home from 6:30 PM-7:30 PM. Cremation will follow and a memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday at the Bruce Funeral Home in Gardner, Kansas. Memorials may be given to the Beloit Food Pantry or the American Diabetes Foundation.
