Donald Wayne Nelson was born January 7, 1930 to George and Jewell Cummings Nelson at Barnard, Kansas. He departed this life of 83 years Friday evening, December 20, 2013 at the Nicol Home in Glasco after a lengthy illness.
Wayne, as everyone knew him, attended grade school and one year of high school at Barnard and then moved to Glasco where he graduated from Glasco High School in the Class of 1948. While in high school, he excelled in football, basketball and baseball.
On June 1, 1951, he was united in marriage to Barbara Betty Beck at Glasco. Two daughters Becky and Carrie were born to this happy union.
A proud American to the core, Wayne faithfully served his country during the Korean Conflict. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed aboard the USS Marsh and was honorably discharged on September 11, 1952.
For over thirty years, Wayne was a dedicated employee of the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America. Nothing, not even the fear of heights stood in his way as he was a tower foreman.
Besides his work, Wayne lo
ved his community. He served Glasco in numerous capacities including Judge, Councilman, Mayor, Board of Directors and Driver for the Glasco Ambulance service and as Chairman of the Glasco Housing Authority. He faithfully served at First Christian Church as a deacon and elder and took care of the church yard. Always on the go, he always had time to enjoy a cup of coffee with his buddies.
His greatest love though, was his family and home. He delighted in being with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, having them sit on his knee while he read to them. He loved sitting on the porch and blowing bubbles with them, and making them wonderful treasures in his workshop. He had a large garden and prided himself in sharing with others.
He was a member of First Christian Church.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Becky Baggett; one brother Palmer Nelson; sisters Ione Hart, Thelma Stanley, George Ann Stevens, and his twin sister Jayne Olson.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his wife Barbara of the home; one daughter Carrie Pennington and husband Bill of Bettendorf, Iowa, one son-in-law Mike Baggett of Lufkin, Texas; one brother Paul Nelson and wife Ila Fern of Glasco; one brother-in-law Monte Beck of Altamont, IL, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren with one enroute along with many relatives and friends.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 27, 2013 at First Christian Church with private family burial of the ashes in Glasco Cemetery. Memorials may given to First Christian Church or Solomon Valley Hospice. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation.
