Doris Mae Katherman was born on April 18, 1925 in Lebanon, Illinois, the daughter of Luther and Mildred Edwards Poss. She died suddenly on Monday, January 21, 2008 at her home in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 3 days.
Doris grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where she attended school and helped take care of her brother and sister during her mother's illness. She later moved to Chicago, where she met Orme Booker. They were united in marriage in 1945, and one daughter was born to this union. They lived in Hastings, Nebraska before moving to Pickstown, South Dakota, where he worked in dam construction. They were married for seven years before his death in 1952.
She moved back to Hastings, and later to Kansas City, where she met Ernest Katherman. They married in 1958, and enjoyed 24 years of marriage until his death in 1982. She worked for many years as a cook for the Woodsonia Elementary School in the Desoto District. She continued to live in Shawnee Mission until moving to Beloit in 2007 to be near her daughter.
Doris enjoyed planting and raising roses, gardening, cooking, and traveling. She attended the Beloit First United Methodist Church, was a member of the Beloit Country Club, and regularly played pinochle. She was also very active in water aerobics at the Wellness Center.
In addition to her husbands, Doris was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Poss; and one sister, Anita Giannini.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Zimmer and her husband Gerald of Beloit; two grandsons, Jim Zimmer and his wife Kendra of Derby, and Jeff Zimmer and his wife Brandi of Beloit; one step-grandson, Darin Zimmer and his wife Delycia of Glen Elder; one niece, JoAnn Stock of Fenton, Missouri; three nephews, Michael, Jaime, and Donald Giannini of St. Louis; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, January 25 at the Beloit First United Methodist Church. Interment services will be at 4:00 PM Friday at the Monticello Cemetery in Shawnee Mission, KS. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Monticello United Methodist Church or the Mitchell County Historical Museum.
