Dorotha "Dot" Johnston

September 7, 1928 — June 12, 2024

Glen Elder

Dorotha "Dot" Mae Weidenhaft was born to Meril & Helen Weidenhaft on September 7, 1928 at Glen Elder KS, and passed away on June 12, 2024 at Kansas Medical Center in Andover at the age of 95. She attended both elementary & high school in Glen Elder, graduating from high school in 1947.

After graduation, Dot attended Kansas State University in the summer and received her teaching certificate. She began teaching school at a rural school in Solomon Rapids township for one year and then worked for several businesses in Salina.

While working in Salina she met Willis "Bud" Johnston. They were married at the Methodist Church in Glen Elder on September 12, 1954, and they continued to live in Salina for several years after that.

In 1961 they moved back to Glen Elder and became active members of the Glen Elder Christian Church, where Dot first served as secretary of the church board and then as deaconess. Dot developed a passion for accounting and bookkeeping, spending numerous years working for the Mitchell County Extension Office and First Federal Savings & Loan, and then after her retirement she kept the books for the Sportsman's Cafe and the City of Glen Elder.

Dot's currency of love was food, and she was well known around town for her wonderful pies, and by her grandkids as having the most well-stocked freezer in Mitchell County. On Sundays after church, she could be found cooking a full Sunday dinner, ironing the clothes and doing the dishes - all while the rest of the family was still at the dinner table.

Later in their marriage, Bud & Dot developed a passion for traveling and enjoyed many cruises, camping trips, and visits to Yuma, AZ.

Dot was an avid follower of sports, from her kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, up through the pros. This love of sports benefited her greatly after she lost her sight and was able to pass the time listening to various sporting events on the radio. This enthusiasm for competition led to a lot of card and other board games, which she passed along to her daughters.

Dot is survived by her daughters Denise (Kevin) Stover, and Shelly (Dave) Kueny; grandchildren Zach (Leslie) Stover, Jessica Stover, Hannah (Brice) Vignery, Sam (Jordan) Kueny, Adrienne (Lucas) Dutton; great-grandchildren Harper Stover, Cooper & Hudson Vignery, Penelope & Dottie Dutton, and many treasured nieces and nephews, and their families, that she was close to throughout her life. She is also survived by many dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Wills "Bud" Johnston; parents Meril & Helen Weidenhaft; mother-in-law Daisy Stratton; father-in-law Joe Stratton; sister Marjorie Eberle & brother-in-law Max Eberle; sister-in-law Glenda Harris and brother-in-law Leroy Harris; and niece Sherri Linton.

Funeral services will be at 10 AM Monday, June 17 at the Glen Elder Christian Church. Visitation will be from 2-7 PM, with family present from 5-7 PM Sunday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Church.
