Dorothea was born April 5, 1916 to Robert Luther and Lillie Smith Braden. The family had to be separated due to Lillie's poor health. Dorothea joined the loving family of Edwin and Mary Kent and their daughter Ethyl on a farm south of Ionia. She would spend over 72 years of her life on that farm.

She remembered well walking 2 ½ miles to the school along with the "Dirty Thirties" and the grasshopper plagues of the time.

She married Garrett Ivan Phillips in 1937. Three boys Larry Wayne, Rollyn J. and Terry Allyn were born to this union.

Dorothea and Jean Boden operated an upholstery business in the Ionia area for over 20 years. She also did beautician work out of her home. Dorothea gave piano lessons to many area children. She played the organ and piano at the Ionia Church for over 40 years.
