Dorothea Pearl Braden Phillips, 91, went home to the Lord late Saturday afternoon March 14, 2008 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.
Dorothea was born April 5, 1916 to Robert Luther and Lillie Smith Braden. The family had to be separated due to Lillie's poor health. Dorothea joined the loving family of Edwin and Mary Kent and their daughter Ethyl on a farm south of Ionia. She would spend over 72 years of her life on that farm.
She attended Harmony Grade School and High School as well as Athens Rural High School, graduating in 1934. After receiving her Normal Teacher training at Emporia State Teachers College, Dorothea taught three years at North Athens-a one room schoolhouse. She remembered well walking 2 ½ miles to the school along with the "Dirty Thirties" and the grasshopper plagues of the time.
She married Garrett Ivan Phillips in 1937. Three boys Larry Wayne, Rollyn J. and Terry Allyn were born to this union.
Dorothea and Jean Boden operated an upholstery business in the Ionia area for over 20 years. She also did beautician work out of her home. Dorothea gave piano lessons to many area children. She played the organ and piano at the Ionia Church for over 40 years.
Dorothea was preceded in death by her husband Garrett; son Larry, daughters-in-law Ferna Phillips and Sonja Phillips; grandson Dustin and great granddaughter Christina Webb. In addition, she was preceded in death by her brother Kenneth Braden, and three sisters Myrle (Braden) Specht, Maxine (Braden) Shane, Ethyl (Kent) Borgaard.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her sons R.J. Phillips and wife Carolyn, Alden, KS, Terry Phillips and wife Rosalie, Scott City, KS; a sister-in-law Ruth Phillips of Beloit; seven grandchildren and their families Diane Erickson, Ferna Louden,, Garrett Phillips, Tane Viers, Elizabeth Smith, Bryan Phillips and Shane Phillips; 18 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Ionia United Methodist Church with Pastor Tessa Zehring officiating. Interment will follow in the Ionia Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, and friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
