Dorothy Jean Stephenson was born August 14, 1930 in Neosho, Missouri, the daughter of Varnel D. and Leatrice Joy Draper. She died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 81 years, 4 months, and 17 days.
She grew up in Apache, Oklahoma, and graduated from Washington High School in Salina.
Dorothy joined the Order of the Eastern Star in the Philippine Islands, was a past member of the Wichita Art Society, and the Florida Orchid Society. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxillary Post 1436 of Salina, Eagles Club of Beloit, and served on the Cawker City Council.
Dorothy owned and operated the House of Beauty in Salina for a number of years and owned and operated the Hindquarters Bar and Grill for 8 ½ years in Cawker City before her health failed and she had to retire at age 77. She was an avid fisherwoman and very competitive. She took particular delight in being named the Crappie Queen of Glen Elder Marina. After catching baskets of crappie, she would take them to town and share them with her friends, after cleaning them.
Her husband C.J. preceded her in death on January 23, 1993 while they were on a cruise to the Bahamas. Survivors include her significant other, John William Rush, beloved friend and devoted companion of the home; son, William C. Stacy Jr., Cawker City; granddaughter, Jessica Jean Stacy, San Antonio TX; stepdaughters, Sheryl Redding and husband Denny, Lyons, CO; three step grandchildren, D.J. Redding and wife, Lyons, CO, Lon Marshal Hosey, and Lisa Hosey; and two step great granddaughters.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 5 at the Cawker City United Methodist Church followed by burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery in Cawker City. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Wednesday at the Church. Memorials may be given to the Church.
