Edward John Barnett was born on April 13, 1914 in Glasco, Kansas, the son of George D. and Grace Nelson Barnett. He died on Sunday, February 22, 2009 in the Mitchell County Hospital at the age of 94 years, 10 months, and 9 days.
He grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and went on to work for the MoPac Railroad. In 1946, he established the Barnett Company in Cawker City, where he patented stow-away hassocks. From 1952 to 1964, he owned and operated the Big B Restaurant before moving to Stockton, where he established a country club. In 1972, he retired and moved to Arizona, where he lived until moving to Beloit to be near his daughter in November 2008.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pearl Gay Elliott in April 1977; his second wife, Effie Tate in January 1988; his parents; a son, Jack Edward Barnett; and a brother, Mervin Barnett.
He is survived by his son, Bill M. Barnett and his wife Gayle of Corpus Christi, Texas; a daughter, Janet Koster of Beloit; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be no services – the body was cremated. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City Golf Course. McDonald-Roberts Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
