Calvin "Edwin" Cook was born on May 5, 1909 in Woodston, Kansas, the son of Albert and Bertha Cahail Cook. He died early Friday, June 2, 2006 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 97 years and 28 days.
Edwin, as he was known, grew up and attended school in the Ogallah area, and then went to work on a farm for his uncle. He and Pace Meall went to California for a few years before moving to Cawker City.
On April 25, 1934, he was united in marriage to Edith M. Roberts in Minneapolis, Kansas. The couple had been privileged to spend more than 67 years of married life together until her death in November of 2001.
After their marriage, they made their home in Cawker City. Edwin served in World War II, and they returned to their new home in Cawker City in 1947. He worked for E.C. Riley Motor Co. and Waconda Motors as parts manager until his retirement. Following retirement, he served as the sexton at Prairie Grove Cemetery for many years.
Edwin was a member of the Cawker City Baptist Church, the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and OES.
In addition to his wife, Edith, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Zoe Conn and Miona Burden.
Edwin is survived by one sister, Nadine Pirotte and her husband Jack of Cawker City; one brother, Neil Cook of Federal Way, Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 7, at the Cawker City Baptist Church. Memorials may be given to the Cawker City Senior Center or American Legion.
