Eleanor L. Shoemaker was born on April 12, 1937 in Monterey, California, the daughter of Sam and Frances Cueba Martin. She died Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 72 years and 7 months.
Eleanor grew up in the Monterey area and graduated from Monterey High School in 1955. Following graduation, she attended business school and later worked at Fort Ord Army Base where she met her future husband.
On October 11, 1959, she was united in marriage with Delmar Shoemaker at the St. Angeles Church in Pacific Grove, California. Two children were born to this union, and they were privileged to spend 50 years of marriage together. Eleanor served as bookkeeper for the Beloit Sale Barn and Delmar's other businesses. Being a home maker and caring for her family was her number one love.
Eleanor enjoyed bowling, loved attending her grandkids' events, and continually updated her scrapbooks. Her family said she was the greatest cook. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Eleanor liked being around people. She was always involved in community activities, spending time with her friends, having coffee and visiting. Wherever Delmar was, she was beside him whether at auctions, doing farm work, or going places. They greatly enjoyed traveling around the country together.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Alfred Martin and Frank Martin.
In addition to her husband Delmar, she is survived by her son, Dennis and his wife Glenda of Glen Elder; her daughter, Julie Cole of Kensington; five grandchildren, Clint, Connor, Drew, Tory, and Rilee; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City with burial at Glenwood Cemetery. A Vigil Service will be at 7:00 PM Sunday at the church. Memorials may be given for the church or the Mitchell Co. Hospital Building Fund.
