Elizabeth L. Runft

March 2, 1915 — April 3, 2007

Elizabeth Lockett Runft was born March 2, 1915 to John C. and Elizabeth Belle Lockett Layton at Evansville, Indiana. She departed this life of 92 years, one month, and one day on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas.

Elizabeth dropped out of high school to care for her ailing mother.

She was married to William Burrill Swain, and to this union were born two daughters Patricia and Judith. This union was later dissolved.

On June 19, 1943, she was united in marriage to Doyle Leroy Runft at Louisville, Kentucky, in the presence of her daughter Judith and her parents. After his discharge in the fall of 1945, they made their home on a farm north and east of Tipton where they lived until moving to Beloit in 1979. Doyle died on March 2, 1997.

A kind hearted, hard working person, Elizabeth enjoyed life. She enjoyed living in the country where she was a constant source of inspiration to Doyle in his efforts to raise cattle and crops while practicing efficient and effective soil conservation. She loved nature, and had a special affinity for butterflies, regardless of the occasion. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and her community. She and Doyle were early members of the Beloit Senior Center and enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and for many years she served as Librarian for the Solomon Valley Hospice.

Elizabeth was a matriarch of Zion Lutheran Church where she enjoyed serving in a number of capacities.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Patricia who died during childhood, one brother Crawford Layton, and her husband Doyle.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her daughter Judith Stroup and husband George of Beloit, one sister-in-law Helen Hoffman of Beloit; three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren, a host of many relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastors Bruce Keck and Cliff Heagy officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Grove Cemetery at Cawker City.

Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church or the Beloit Senior Center. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home
