Elizabeth Susan Vernon, the daughter of Hylas C. and Marietta Belle Lawson Smith was born June 28, 1915 at Towaoc, Colorado. She departed this life of 90 years early Friday, January 27, 2006 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit.
Elizabeth came to Kansas at an early age and was a graduate of Beloit High School. Her academic pursuits continued at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina and she graduated from Whittier College in Whittier, California.
She was married to Harold Vernon and to this union was born one son Larry.
Elizabeth loved education and children, and for many years she was an elementary school teacher. Her career began at Edson, Kansas for five years, then she taught in Beloit for five years, three years in Simpson, and then for twenty-two years in Big Pine, California. Always a stickler for excellence and discipline, she won the hearts of her students. After her retirement, she lived with her son Larry and his wife Jill in Concordia for many years, and she enjoyed the last few years living with her sister Barbara Harrison in Beloit.
Besides teaching, Elizabeth's family was her pride and joy. While living with her son, she developed a very strong relationship with her grandchildren Clay and Seth. She enjoyed singing, dancing, playing in bridge clubs and cooking.
Elizabeth was a woman of great integrity and great faith. She was very devoted to church and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Beloit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Hylas Smith, and two sisters Eugenia Smith and Naomi Shawver.
Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her son Larry Vernon and wife Jill Casado of Wichita, Kansas, one sister Barbara Harrison of Beloit, two brothers Sidney Smith of McPherson, Kansas, John Smith and wife Tansy of Independence, California, two grandchildren Clay Vernon and Seth, and wife Ashlee Vernon. She was loved by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
