Louis "Elroy" Horn was born on November 14, 1914 in Glasco, Kansas, the son of Fred and Mae Lindgren Horn. He died Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at the Mitchell County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 93 years, 7 months, and 27 days.
Elroy grew up and attended school at Glasco and Simpson. He went on to work for the county bridge department, and was injured in 1969. Following his injury, he continued to stay busy building picnic tables, gates, and trellises.
On September 16, 1939, he was united in marriage to Mable M. Evert in Mankato, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born: Joy Elaine and Carolyn Kay. After their marriage, they lived in Simpson. They were privileged to spend nearly 63 years of marriage together until her death in February, 2002.
Elroy loved working with horses, and often used them in parades while kids would ride on a cart. He also raised rat terrier dogs. He especially treasured his time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He attended the Crossroads Assembly of God Church in Belleville.
In addition to his wife, Elroy was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Blanche Trout, Dorothea Grittman, Lottie Schneider, and Nellie Howard; son-in-law, Dorlan Winters; and one grandson, Daniel Winters.
Elroy is survived by his two daughters, Joy Winters of Hatfield, Arkansas and Carolyn Vanderraad and her husband Bill of Saskatchewan, Canada; two granddaughters, Julie Flax and Doria Ritz; three great grandchildren, Shaila Ritz, Cody Flax, and Kylie Flax; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, July 3, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit with burial at Glasco Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
