Erma J. Luckey

April 10, 1937 — July 30, 2019

Cawker City

Erma Jean German of Cawker City, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, July 30th, 2019, at the age of 82, at the Parkview Care Center in Osborne, Kansas.

Erma was born April 10, 1937 in Glen Elder Kansas to Kenneth & Ellen German (Shull).

She grew up on her parent's farm located 3-1/2 miles southwest of Glen Elder. As a child Erma loved all the animals on the farm, something that carried with her all her life, caring for any animals whenever possible.

Erma attended the Fairview country school for three years then graduating high school in the new Glen Elder high school in 1955.

After working for an attorney in Beloit, she moved to Wichita, Kansas where she worked in the offices of Dun & Bradstreet, later transferring to the Kansas City office.

While in Kansas City she met and married Donald L Luckey in Kansas City, MO. On January 8, 1960. The couple soon returned to Beloit where Donald was employed by the Beloit Police Department.

Three sons and a daughter were born to them. Daughter, Diane Marie, went to her heavenly home at the age of 16 months.

Donald Luckey died in California in 1977.

Erma and the three sons returned to Glen Elder where she was employed in an insurance agency prior to eventually moving to Cawker City, Kansas. She became assistant Librarian at the Cawker City Public Library, becoming head Librarian in 1987, a position she continued until her retirement in 2005. Erma loved children and always referred to the kids that visited the library as "her kids".

Outside of family and friends she had two great loves. Animals, especially any stray or wounded animal, and "her kids", which everyone around town knew meant any children she encountered.

After retirement, Erma continued her interest in the Genealogy Society located within the Cawker City library assisting anyone with their family research whenever possible.

One of Erma's biggest enjoyments was the music of friends Buddy and Rose Mitchell of Downs, Kansas. She always attended their musical programs and whenever anyone came to visit, they were sure to hear one of their many CD's playing on the stereo. Sunday mornings when Buddy would be at the Glen Elder radio station for "Gospel Down South", Erma was sure to be listening.

Erma is preceded in death by her husband Don, daughter Diane Marie, and son Steven.

Erma is survived by sons Michael (Rose) of Frisco, Texas and Ed Luckey of Kansas City, granddaughter Rebecca Luckey and great-grandson Seth, grandson Daniel Luckey, granddaughter Ella Luckey and brothers Richard (Millie) German, Kenley German of Deshler, Nebraska, and Rodney (Maureen) German of Ft. Worth, Texas.
