Esther M. Boehner

December 29, 1921 — December 1, 2018

Beloit

Esther Marie Walter Boehner was born December 29, 1921 to Alexander and Emma Sprenger Fobes at the family home just north of Solomon Rapids, Kansas. She departed this life on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the Resident Care Center in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 96 (just 28 days from her 97 th birthday). Affectionately called "the Caboose", she was the youngest of seven siblings which included Joe, Charlie, Roy, Ruth, Glen and Helen.

Esther was a lifelong resident of the Beloit area. She lived the majority of her years on the family farm until it became necessary for her to move into the Resident Care Center at the Beloit Hospital in 2010. She also resided in Glen Elder from 1993 to 1999.

Esther attended Beulah District #60 and graduated from Beloit High School with the class of 1939. After graduation she worked for the County Extension Office and then the County Treasurer's Office.

March 21, 1945 Esther eloped with her sweetheart, WWII veteran, D Edward Walter. To this union were born four children: Joan, Donna, Jim and Barbara. Shortly after their 45th wedding anniversary, Ed passed away. Esther found love again in 1993 and married Cecil Boehner. Cecil passed suddenly in December of 1999.

Traveling was a favored pastime for her and she was proud of the fact that she had visited 48 states, Canada and Mexico.

Esther could frequently be found sewing, quilting, crocheting, and gardening. She had a green thumb and was quick to show you her blooming African Violets and Christmas Cactus. She canned and baked and her Post Toastie cookies and raisin bars were, and still are, family favorites.

Esther enjoyed hosting and attending social clubs including Browns Creek, Sans Souci and the Glen Elder Library Club. Later in life, when the kids had all grown, she enjoyed a daily swim at the Wellness Center, and going for lunch at the Glen Elder Senior Center where she quilted with the ladies there.

Esther was a born caregiver. At different times, she cared for her aging mother, cousin, sister-in-law and niece so they were able to stay in their homes. Family was her first priority and she was always available to host family gatherings, attend band concerts and sports events, sew prom dresses and play costumes, or babysit any of her grandchildren or great grandchildren.

Left to mourn her passing are her children: Jim Walter of the home, Donna Morrell of Beloit, Joan Orr and husband Jerry of Clay Center and Barbara Agnew and husband Robert of Clay Center. Grandchildren: Rayleen Dreher and husband Dan of Clay Center; Chris Orr of Abilene; Jeffrey Morrell and wife Vicki of Salina; Stephanie Morrell of Columbia, MO; Timothy Morrell and wife Kristin of Lawrence; Natalie McBride and husband Kevin of Mission; Lyndsey Crisenbery and husband Derrick of Hays; Kasey Morrell of Lawrence; Whitney Morrell of Glen Elder; Madison Agnew of San Luis Obispo, CA; Payton Agnew of Missoula, MT. Cecil's children: Nadine Railsback and husband Frank of Mankato, Norval Boehner and wife Karen of Oswego and their families. 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents, brothers and sisters and her son-in-law, Gary Morrell.

Funeral services will be at 2 PM Saturday, December 8 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-8 PM with family present from 6-8 PM Friday, December 7 at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Perdue House, Glen Elder Senior Center, or the NCK Wellness Center.
