Esther L. Weltmer

Esther Lucille Scalapino Weltmer was born March 15, 1918 at the family farm near Everest, Kansas. She died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the Mitchell County Hospital Long Term Care Unit at the age of 92 years, 2 months, and one day.
She was educated in the Everest school system, graduating from High School in 1936. She was the lead violinist in the high school orchestra. Esther attended KU for one year and then entered St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1940. She did private duty for awhile and in 1942 became a surgical nurse and was assistant supervisor. She taught student nurses operating room technique.
She married Dr. Roger Weltmer in April of 1946, and to them was born Jeffery Ward Weltmer in November 1947. She moved to Beloit with her family in 1948, and became a housewife, giving up nursing.
She was active in the Presbyterian Church, acting as its first woman deacon and later an elder. She enjoyed playing golf, and was the Ladies Club Champion around 1973. She was a member of the Euterpe Club for many years, and was active in the Presbyterian Women's Organization.
In 1982, she took over the local chairmanship of the American Cancer Society that her mother-in-law had run.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Grace, and one brother Ralph.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Roger Weltmer of the home; her son, Dr. Jeff Weltmer and his wife Jana of Olathe; two grandchildren, Anne LaFon and Kelli Blakeney; four great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 26 at the Beloit First Presbyterian Church followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation and the casket will remain closed. Memorials may be given to the Beloit First Presbyterian Church.
