Ethel Louise Hollaway was born on October 18, 1909 in Beloit, Kansas. She passed away at the Mitchell County Hospital on June 11, 2006 at the age of 96 years, 7 months, and 24 days.
She was the first child born to Harry and Mary McMillan Van Amburg. Ethel graduated from Beloit High School with the class of 1927. After graduation, she taught at a one room school house for one year. Ethel then went to work at the old Brown Store in Beloit.
On March 18, 1933, she was united in marriage to Frank Hollaway. She became mother to his children, Frances, Bill, and Betty. A daughter, Mary, was born to this union.
Ethel went to work at Lutz Brothers Wholesale, which later became Hollaway Wholesale. She and Frank worked there together for many years. After Frank's retirement, she operated the business with their son Bill until his death. Ethel continued working at the wholesale business until it closed.
Ethel was a member of the Beloit Presbyterian Church, the Euterpe Club, and a charter member of the Beloit Country Club, where she played golf until she was in her late 80's. She was the score keeper for the tournaments for years. Flowers from her rose garden decorated the tables many times for the Rose Culp Tournament. She enjoyed bowling, playing golf, and playing pinochle with her many friends. She also enjoyed crocheting and quilting, and made many lap robes for the nursing home and quilts for all her family.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents; her brothers, Dick and John; her son, Bill; and a grandson, Jeff Angell.
She is survived by her daughters, Frances Dunn of Santa Fe, NM, Betty Vernon and her husband Bob of Beloit, and Mary Angell and her husband Steve of Ozark, MO; her grandchildren, Dana Dunn of Cazadiro, CA, Sally Dunn of Santa Fe, NM, Vicki Giddings of McPherson, Van Hollaway of Nashville, TN, Vince Hollaway of Joplin, MO, Frank Hollaway of Beloit, Rick Vernon of Fargo, SD, Kay Solt of Concordia, John Angell of Ozark, MO, Jeanne Angell of St. Louis, MO, and Joanne Angell of Springfield, MO; 13 great grandchildren; and 9 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, June 15, 2006 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
