Eva Josephine Downey was born on May 12, 1908 in St. Joseph, Kansas, the daughter of Joe and Anna Perret Girard. She died on Friday, April 25, 2008 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 99 years, 11 months, and 13 days.
Eva grew up and attended school in the St. Joseph area before moving to Concordia.
On December 27, 1941, she was united in marriage with Joseph Downey in Concordia. Three children were born to this union. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed south of Simpson before moving to Beloit in the mid-1970's. They were privileged to spend more than 53 years of marriage together until his death in February of 1995.
Eva loved her family, and enjoyed spending time playing cards and dominoes with them. She was also a good cook, and often baked pies for friends and family. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and had a soft spot for animals and children.
She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Helen Ann; four brothers, Gaspard, Gene, Louis, and Armand; and five sisters, Frances Dunham, Emma Mahon, Leah Pellant Barnhart, Mary Rose Sherman, and Helen Carrara.
Eva is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Colby of Beloit; her son, Patrick Downey and his wife Janet of Manuta, Utah; four sisters, Blanche Mossburgh and Dora Mae Moffett, both of Concordia, Georgianna Spafford of Torrence, California, and Julia Hammil of Concord, California; nine grandchildren, Jason Colby and his wife Jennifer of Manhattan and their children Donovan and Kaiden, Nichelos Colby of Lawrence, Juliane Colby of Lawrence, Breanne Colby of Wichita, and Quinn, Kimbreanna, Lindsey, Angelise, and Jianna Downey of Manuta; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 30 at St. John's Catholic Church followed by burial in Glasco Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the McDonald Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 6:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Masses, the Church, or Mitchell County Home Health.
