Evelyn E. File

June 28, 1917 — August 15, 2014

Evelyn Elizabeth File was born on June 28, 1917 on a farm south of Glen Elder, Kansas, the daughter of Walter Everett and Edith Emelia Ireland Golladay. She died early Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 97 years, 1 month, and 18 days.
She attended grade school at Bunker Hill, and then moved to Turkey Township to live with her grandma at age 13. As a freshman, she moved to Beloit to attend school. During her sophomore year, she met Marion Wilson File. On October 16, 1933, she and Marion eloped to Phillipsburg to be married. The proud couple had one twenty dollar gold piece in their possession, which they soon found out was barely enough to cover the expense of the license, the ring, and ceremony. Three sons and two daughters were born to this union, and they were privileged to spend more than 55 years of marriage together until Marion's untimely death in August of 1989.
Evelyn was very active in the Beloit United Methodist Church, where she was the head of the Women's Quilting Circle and was named Woman of the Year. In addition to quilting, she also greatly enjoyed embroidering, and baking her beloved custard pies. Evelyn also loved bowling, and was still bowling in the State Bowling Tournament into her 80's. She also spent much of her time working along-side Marion on the farm, driving both tractors and trucks.
In addition to her husband, Marion, she was preceded in death by her parents, her son, James, and two brothers, Edward and Jim Golladay.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Martha and Jimmy Kibbe, Charles and Kathy File, Bill and Jodi File, and Deb and Scott Treaster, all of Beloit; grandchildren, Angela Engelbert and husband Blaine, Beloit, Chris Helmbrecht and wife Ranae, Beloit, Robin Bowman and husband Kris, Wichita, Rachel Treaster, Wichita, Stephanie Gerken and husband Scott, Paola, Darin File and wife Holly, Columbia, MO, Devin Treaster and wife Kelsey, Beloit, Courtney Bishop and husband Dickson, Olathe, and Gary File and wife Jessica, St. Charles, MO; 12 great grandchildren, Jared and Vincent Engelbert, Megan Helmbrecht, Chase, Bryce, and Gavin Bowman, Maci and Eli Gerken, Carson and Kylin File, Avery Treaster, and Will Bishop; two step great grandchildren, Brandon and wife Ashley, and Brett Behymer and wife Jenica; two step great-great grandchildren, Easton and Colton Behymer; and a host of other relatives and friends.
