Evelyn Mae McKee was born May 31, 1921 to Clyde Leo and Vola Blanche Shurts McKee on the family farm south of Asherville, Kansas. She departed this life of 95 years Sunday morning, March 19, 2017 at Eaglecrest Retirement Community in Salina, Kansas.
Evelyn grew up in the Green Mound community and learned to milk cows at a young age. She faithfully attended Green Mound Church of Christ, attended Green Mound grade school for eight years and then graduated from Asherville Rural High School in the Class of 1940. She then attended Brown Mackie Business School in Salina, Kansas for nine months. She found employment in Salina at Kansas Power and Light Company for two years.
She met her husband-to-be at Chautauqua Park in Mitchell County; and she and Daryl Simmons of Barnard, Kansas were married on August 25, 1944 at the home of her parents. Evelyn and Daryl lived in the Barnard farming community for many years, and three children Steven, David, and Nancy were born to this happy union.
After Daryl's passing in 1985, Evelyn stayed involved running the farm. She married Delbert McMann of Beloit on December 24, 1994. She and Delbert lived in Beloit until Delbert's passing in 1997. She moved to Salina, Kansas in 2007.
Evelyn was a very faithful member of the Church of Christ her entire life, at Asherville, Beloit, and in Salina. She was an active member of 4-H in her youth, and later, the Sewing Leader for the club of her children for years. She enjoyed being an active member of the 4th Creek Social Club and Scotts Lassies F.C.E.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Daryl Simmons and Delbert McMann; sisters Kathryn Gates and Eva Burnette; son-in-law Ivan McKinney and daughter-in-law Mary Simmons.
Surviving are her sons Steven Simmons and wife Alice of Barnard, David Simmons and wife Carol of Salina; daughter Nancy Moll and husband David of Greenwood, Nebraska; stepson Ray McMann and wife Cindy of Wichita, stepdaughter Doris Fox and husband Arnold of Beloit; one brother Vernon McKee and wife Maurita of Gainesville, FL; grandchildren Rachel Trower (Nick), Darin Simmons (Jami), Analena Manbeck (Mark), Daryl Simmons; great grandchildren Madison Mary Simmons, Kolbi Michelle Trower; eight step grandchildren, many step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Saltville Cemetery near Barnard. Memorials may be given to the KS 4H Foundation or the Barnard Lions Scholarship Fund. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
