Everett Mastin

Everett Eugene Mastin was born May 29, 1923 in Herington, Kansas, where he lived until the age of 5. At that time, the family moved to Beloit, Kansas. Everett went to be with the Lord on May 3, 2025 at the age of 101. He is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley George Mastin and Ethel Carolyn (Girtch) Mastin; one sister, Mary Arlene (Mastin) Gwin; and his wife of 65 years, 7 months, Ovetta Catherine (Kennedy) Mastin.

Everett attended the Swallow Aircraft School in Wichita, Kansas to become an airline and engine mechanic. He met Ovetta (Tiny) at a picnic in 1942. They married on November 11, 1943 and moved to Beloit in 1946, where they have lived ever since.

His work career started in November, 1942 as a mechanic for American Airlines in New York for 1 ½ years. Everett and Tiny had a long-distance relationship until they married and she moved to New York to be with him. They were there six months before he enlisted in the Army.

On July 4, 1944, Everett was sworn into the United States Army at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. He served two years and was discharged July 4, 1946. After his discharge, Everett was offered a job at his dad's tire shop, which is what brought them to Beloit. This lasted less than a year, when Everett went to work for Glen Elder Bank as an assistant cashier. He worked there for almost two years. He then went to work for Guaranty State Bank as an assistant cashier, and advanced to Vice President and Senior Trust Officer. Everett worked for the Guaranty State Bank for 34 years.

During his years at Guaranty State Bank, Everett also served on the Beloit City Council for six years, Treasurer for NCK Regional Planning Commission for 15 years, President for the local chapter of National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers for one year, and held several positions with the Kansas Banker's Association.

Everett was also Treasurer and Chairman of Service to Military Families for the American Red Cross from 1946 to 1992. He was in the Rotary Club for 25 years with perfect attendance. He also was First Chairman of the North Central Kansas Chapter of the Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE) for three years.

His volunteer work included donating blood as an "on-call" donor due to his rare blood type. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for 11 years.

He was a host father to AFS student Flor Vergara of Chile for one year, and had maintained continual contact with her.

Over the years, Everett perfected his craft of woodworking and carpentry, doing projects that ranged from making small gift items to major construction projects. His projects included small items, such as games, puzzles, Christmas ornaments, and toys; medium-sized items such as mirrors, music boxes, picture frames, bread boxes, quilt racks, and bedroom built-ins; larger furniture pieces, such as picnic tables and lawn furniture, coffee tables, kitchen tables, hope chests, chairs, and china hutches. He also did major construction such as finishing off basements, building decks, and building garages.

Everett and Tiny loved the Lord, and spent years ministering through their church. Everett even taught a Bible Study while living at Hilltop.

Everett is survived by his daughters, Lin (Rob) Erickson, Anna Mastin, and Charlene (Chuck) Prickett; three granddaughters, Tammy Griffith, Amy Randa, and Jennifer (Darin) Hecht; two step-grandsons, Ryan Erickson and David Erickson; five great-grandchildren, Lauren Dorr, Blake Dorr, Aiden Randa, Alex Hecht, and Braedyn Hecht; and two step-great-grandchildren, Brady Erickson and Tyler Erickson.

Graveside services will be at 1 PM Saturday, May 17 at the Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may sign the register book from 9 AM to 5 PM Friday, May 16 at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. The casket will remain closed. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested for the Beloit First Christian Church or American Red Cross Midway Chapter.
