Fern Etta Lund was born on January 2, 1923 on a farm southeast of Beloit, near the Hopewell Church, the daughter of Roy N. and Mary Williams Oakley. She died early Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 8 days.
Fern attended school in Glen Elder, and graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1940. Following graduation, she received her Normal Training and taught school for several years.
She later worked as a nurse's aide at the Miller Nursing Home in Cawker City. Later she was a founding nurse at Hilltop Lodge, serving as the first Activities Director. She also spent a few years working at the Sportsman Café.
On December 29, 1941, she was united in marriage to Raymond R. Lund in Baltimore, Maryland. Two children were born to this union. They were privileged to spend more than 52 years of marriage together until Raymond died in November 1994.
Fern was very active in the community – she was a member of the Glen Elder Christian Church, the Glen Elder American Legion Auxiliary, Glen Elder Senior Citizens Center, the Glen Elder High School Alumni Committee, and the Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary, where she served as a Pink Lady. She also delivered Meals on Wheels and distributed food commodities through the American Legion. Music was an important part of Fern's life, and she greatly enjoyed leading in songs during the Glen Elder Christmas program. She was awarded the American Legion Auxiliary Woman of the Year Award for 2000.
In addition to her husband, Fern was preceded in death by a son, Larry L. Lund in 1998; her parents; two sisters, Evelyn and Ava; and a brother, Hubert.
Fern is survived by her daughter, Norma and her husband Jerry Blass of Beloit; one sister-in-law, Lucille Lund of Nampa, Idaho; one grandson, Charles R. Blass of Leoti; four great grandchildren, Jasmin Blass, Blaiz Libby-Blass, Secylla Blevins-Blass, and Charles Brady Blass; and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Monday, November 15 at the Glen Elder Christian Church followed by buril in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit. Memorials may be given to the American Legion Auxiliary.
