Frances Kathryn Heinen Thull was born April 4, 1924 in Cawker City, Kansas, the daughter of John Baptist and Mary Frances Duskie Heinen. She attended elementary school at St. John's in Beloit, Walnut Grove District #65 in Bloomfield Township in Mitchell County and graduated from St. John's High school in 1941. She attended Marymount College in Salina for two years and also attended Fort Hays College to pursue studies in library science.
She married Eugene Nicholas Thull at Hendricks Field, Sebring Florida on October 23, 1945.
Mrs. Thull was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Cawker City, a member of the Catholic Ladies Guild, the American Legion auxiliary and the Cawker City Community Club. She was appointed by Governor Carlin to serve on the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts from 1979-1985 and again appointed by Governor Finney from 1994-1997. For several years she served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kansas State YWCA. She served as Democratic committee woman from Cawker Township. Kay was a den mother for the Cub Scouts for six years and a Girl Scout leader for two years. She was as a diocesan officer and was deanery president of the Salina Council of Catholic Women in the council's formative years under Bishops Freking and Vogel.
Mrs. Thull was Cawker City librarian from 1963 to 1974. She worked for several years for Central Kansas Libraries Systems as a traveling cataloguer in public libraries in Rooks, Smith, Osborne, Mitchell and Cloud counties. She served for several years as librarian in the Tipton HIgh School. She was a secretary for twenty years in the Thull Law Office in Cawker City. In recent years she has served on the board of the Cawker City Senior Center, Inc. and other local boards.
Her hobbies included reading, genealogy research and promoting tourism in Cawker City.
Mrs. Thull was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene (Red) Thull and her son, Tracy J. Thull.
She is survived by her children Barbara G. Finlayson, Norwich, CT, Michael R. "Mickey", Wichita, Virginia K."Ginger", Concordia, Scott E., Ft. Collins CO; her brother, John D. Heinen; her sister, Joan E. Taylor, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, February 18, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Cawker City with burial in the church cemetery. A vigil service will be at 7:00 PM Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Thull Family Scholarship at Benedictine College.
