Fred J. Gary, the son of Fred Jefferson and Jennie Davida Myers Gary was born July 28, 1934 at Minneapolis, Kansas. He departed this life of 72 years, 10 months, and 16 days on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Fred grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Minneapolis High School with the Class of 1952. He continued his education at Kansas State College and later earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
On June 10, 1956, he was united in marriage to Joyce Elaine White at Beloit, Kansas.
Fred was an aerospace and computer engineer. His first experience with missile technology was the installation of the Atlas and Titan II Weapons systems in Kansas. After a short time with Douglas Aircraft in California testing the DC-9, he was accepted by the NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio to develop and operate the launch facility systems for the Centaur project. NASA then transferred him to Cape Kennedy, Florida where he was responsible for the development and operation of the fuel propellant loading systems of the pre-Apollo unmanned Saturn missions.
His achievements did not stop there; he was a power plant engineer for Kansas Power and Light, and was also employed by the Department of Defense as a Mechanical Engineer at McConnell Air Force Base and was Chief of Utilities at Fort Riley, and EMCS Supervisor at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico.
Always wanting to be busy, Fred enjoyed carpentry work and history. After retirement, he and Joyce enjoyed taking long trips and seeing the country together, frequently taking the road less traveled. He loved telling stories and sharing his experiences with others.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters infant Kathryn Gary, Helene Finley, Phyllis Bagwell, and Patricia Saxton.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Joyce of the home, one sister Harriett Gary of Topeka, a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.
