Frederick Whoolery was born June 29, 1935 to James Robert and Edith M. Frederick Whoolery in Clairton, Pennsylvania.
He departed this life of 70 years, 7 months, & 25days peacefully Thursday, March 23, 2006 at his home in Glen Elder, Kansas.
"Fred", as everyone knew him, graduated from Clairton High School. He worked in and around the Pittsburgh area and began a career in food service at Clarion State College. He was then called to serve of his country in the United States Army and completed his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas. He was stationed in Germany, and while there, had the opportunity to meet Elvis Presley. After his military service, he returned to Alliance, Ohio. While in Alliance, he worked in food service and later accepted a similar position at Yale University at New Haven, Connecticut.
On June 17, 1958, he was married to Ann Messenger. One son Tom was born to this union which was later dissolved.
After working in food service for a number of years, he joined the steel industry and from 1966 until 1983, Fred was employed by Ulbrich Steel Company; from 1983 until 1998 he was a foreman for CMI Steel and from 1998 until his retirement in 2000, he worked for Cold Metal Products. He retired in June, 2000 and spent his retirement years in Glen Elder, Kansas.
Fred was a devoted family man who cherished life. He loved sports of all types and declined a minor league baseball pitching assignment to care for his family. He loved hunting and fishing and was a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fred was always cheerful and wanted to makes others laugh. His greatest joy was being in the presence of his grandchildren and loved attending their activities.
He was a member of the Glen Elder Christian Church and served on the Board of Directors for the Glen Elder Senior Center. In addition, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Veteran of the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Edith Maxwell, and three brothers James Whoolery, Clyde Whoolery, and Louis Whoolery.
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his son Tom Whoolery and wife Becky of Glen Elder, Kansas; one brother Leroy "Pete" Whoolery of Clairton, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren Garrett, Mitchell, and Correy Whoolery, and a host of many relatives and friends.
The funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 30, 2006 at the Glen Elder Christian Church with Pastor Kelly Benton officiating. Cremation will follow the service and the ashes will be scattered at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Glen Elder Christian Church. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
