Frederick A. Karlin

July 10, 1943 — May 19, 2006

Frederick Albert Karlin was born on July 10, 1943 in Hays, Kansas, the son of Leo E. and Martha Etzel Karlin. He died Friday, May 19, 2006 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 62 years, 10 months, and 9 days.
Fred grew up in western Kansas, and attended the St. Francis Seminary in Victoria, Kansas. He went on to graduate from Portland State in 1968, and did some graduate work at Fort Hays State.
He was self-employed with Karlin's Siding and Insulation, and later worked as a custodian for the Mitchell County Courthouse.
On February 5, 1977, he was united in marriage with Nadine Plante at St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit.
Fred was a believer in keeping peace and making justice, and even when he disagreed with you, he never fought back. He liked to "stir things up" and get things done, and this helped him to be a very avid fund-raiser. He was active in the St. John's Church parish, and the Tractors For Our Daily Bread program. Fred was also very involved with the Lions Club – he served as past president of the Beloit Lions Club and the past District Governor, and was very instrumental in chartering the Beloit Night Lions Club. Ever the political ambassador, Fred served as the chairman for the Mitchell County Democratic Party, and enjoyed sharing his views and opinions in his columns for the Beloit Call.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Katie Dreiling; five brothers, Leroy, Larry, Herb, and two infant brothers, Normand and Gerard.
Fred is survived by his wife Nadine of the home; four brothers, Felix of Lawrence, John of Hillsboro, Oregon, Tom of Tacoma, Washington, and Peter of Beloit; four sisters, Sister Leonissa and Sister Mary Martha, both of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, Betty Pfeifer of Hays, and Martha Biegler of Helena, Montana; two honorary daughters, Erica Espinoza Flores of Lima, Peru, and Anna Nicolas of Slavonski Brod Croatia; two honorary granddaughters, Ivana and Helena Nicolas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial mass will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 27 at St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit. Memorials may be given to the St. John's Memorial Trust Fund. There will be no visitation - a burial ceremony took place on Saturday, May 20 in St. John's Cemetery.
