Gary A. Helvey

Gary Arnold Helvey, the son of Clifton Theodore and Lola Irene Rounkles Helvey, was born November 11, 1938 near Hunter, Kansas, and departed this life on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at the age of 67 years, 9 months and 19 days.
Gary grew up in the Cawker City area and graduated from Cawker City High School in the class of 1956. He joined the United States Navy in June of 1956 and served his country in the Vietnam War. Gary had numerous occupations during his life, which included working at Richardson Mfg., doing Carpenter work, Law Enforcement in Mitchell County and being a barber.
On May 24, 1959 Gary was united in marriage to Janet Kay Moon at Mankato, Ks and five children were born to this union, Toni, Jacque, Clay, Jeri and Casey. Although Gary & Jan's marriage was dissolved after 37 years they remained friends and enjoyed spending holidays together as a family.
His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Bampy". Gary coached Pee Wee baseball for many years; he loved to dance, and enjoyed doing woodworking. In later years he enjoyed going to dances and traveling with his companion, Joanne.
He was preceded in death by his father Clifton "Manny" Helvey and a brother in law Arnold Gosser.
He is survived by his mother, Lola Helvey, Wakeeney; his children, Toni Schlaefli, and husband Ron, Cawker City; Jacque Moore, and husband Rick, Glen Elder; Clay Helvey and wife Lisa, Lutz, Florida; Jeri Bryant and husband Tracy, Winchester, Ks; and Casey Coulson and husband Shad, Prescott Valley, Arizona. His grandchildren Josh, Cody and John Schlaefli, Jason Thomas; Mercedes Cornell; Elexa Duwe, Rikki and Kylie Moore, Caitlyn, Courtney and Clifton Helvey, Eric, Cassie, Cole and Makenzi Bryant and Shayne Coulson; his great-grandchildren Tyea Schlaefli, Roman and Jaxson Thomas, Hadley Cornell, Noah and Ella Duwe; his sisters Eileen Gosser, Wakeeney and Carol Otto and husband Larry, Minnesota; his brother Ray Helvey and wife Jan, Colorado; his ex-wife Jan Helvey, Glen Elder, sister-in-law Betty Thompson and husband Butch, Mankato, a very special sister-in-law Vickie Moon, Concordia, his companion Joanne Trimble, Salina and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, September 5, at the Prairie Grove Cemetery, Cawker City. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or O.C.C.K.
