Gary Wayne Morrell was born on February 13, 1948 in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Harold "Wayne" and Delores K. Sleichter Morrell. He died on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 68 years, 11 months, and 13 days.
Gary grew up in the old Sunflower Post Office south of Beloit and attended country school. He graduated from Beloit High School. Following graduation, he went to Kansas State University for a semester before joining the United States Army and serving in the Vietnam War. He was discharged in 1969, and returned to the family farm.
On October 3, 1970, he was united in marriage with Donna Walter at the Zion Lutheran Church in Beloit. Seven children were born to this union, and they were privileged to spend more than 46 years of marriage together.
Gary went on to attend Marymount College and graduated in 1979. He worked several years at the Mitchell County Hospital and Hober's Computer Store, and later spent 20 years working at Bell Memorials, while still spending his summers on the farm.
In his spare time, Gary enjoyed reading and watching Western movies. He also greatly enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids in their various activities throughout the years. He loved spending time with his family in Colorado, and enjoyed the mountain views.
He also served as a Boy Scout leader, treasurer of the Wrestling Club, Sunday school teacher, Church Council President, and was a member of the VFW.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, and a baby brother Bobby Dale.
He is survived by his wife Donna of the home; his children, Jeff and wife Vicki of Salina, Stephanie of Columbia, MO, Timothy and wife Kristin of Lawrence, Natalie McBride and husband Kevin of Mission, KS, Lyndsey Crisenbery and husband Derrick of Hays, Kasey of Lawrence, and Whitney of Glen Elder; his mother, Delores of Beloit; two sisters, Marilyn Morrell and Kelli Powers and husband Todd, all of Arlington, KS; 12 grandchildren, Jennifer, Kain, Camden, Dagen, Delanie, Daxton, Adelyn, Eli, Levi, Dylan, Layla, and Dawsyn; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2 PM Monday, January 30 at the McDonald Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1-8 PM with family present from 3-5 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Perdue House, Summer Kids Cafe, or American Cancer Society.
