Gene Neifert Porter was born December 8, 1926 on a farm south of Glen Elder, Kansas, the son of Archie and Beulah Neifert Porter. He departed this life on Wednesday, April 05, 2006 at Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 28 days.
Gene graduated from Glen Elder High School with the Class of 1944. He very much enjoyed playing football during his high school years.
Following graduation, he farmed with his dad, and worked for the Rural Electric Administration.
On August 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Donna Jones at the home of her parents in Browns Creek Township in Jewell County. Three sons were born to this union: Paul, Jerry, and Tom.
Gene was a very successful farmer and stockman, as he greatly enjoyed this occupation. He was also an environmentalist, having planted hundreds of trees. In 1993, he received a KBA Soil Conservation Award, at which time he was commended for having "established an incredible number of miles of terraces and acres of waterways". He kept a full line of modern machinery – it was his goal to take good care of the land.
In years past, Gene enjoyed square dancing, boating, camping, and fishing. He was also active in the Kansas Bankers Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Jerry.
Gene is survived by his wife, Donna of the home; two sons, Paul and his wife Inna of Overland Park, and Tom and his wife Beverly of Glen Elder; one daughter-in-law, Jana Porter of Manhattan; nine grandsons, Jacob, Michael, Austin, Lucas, Nicholas, Levi and his wife Angel, Matthew, Russell, and Andrew; one great granddaughter, Addison; one brother, Max and his wife Phyllis of Glen Elder; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 PM Friday, April 7, at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
