Gene F. Waddell

September 20, 1922 — April 14, 2009

Gene Frank Waddell was born on September 20, 1922 at Beloit, Kansas. He departed this life of 86 years, 6 months, and 24 days on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina.

A lifelong resident of Mitchell County, Gene was raised on a farm southwest of Beloit by his grandmother Laura Waddell. He attended the Beloit schools.

Gene joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. This adventure took him to Idaho where he planted a vast number of trees.

On March 10, 1943 he joined the United States Army. He served as a medic in the 67th Evacuation Hospital which saw action in the Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Northern France campaigns. He received his honorable discharge on November 27, 1945.

On January 6, 1945, he married Iris Myrtle Bird in Dursly, England. This union was blessed with six children Julie, Patrick, Eric, Michael, Teresa, and Cindy.

Gene worked in a variety of jobs during his life. He was the Chief Operator of the Beloit Light and Water Plant for many years and then became a pumper in the oil fields of Western Kansas. He had a 'green thumb' and planted numerous yards in the Beloit area and did the landscaping for the Thierolf Park.

An honest, kind hearted and congenial person, Gene was always there for people. He took pride in whatever he was doing. Many people entrusted him to take care of their homes while they were away on vacation. He enjoyed woodworking, working in his vegetable garden and visiting with people.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6242, Beloit.

His wife Iris died in 2000.

Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his children Julie Gary and husband Dick of Hutchinson, Patrick Waddell and wife Linda of Stockton, Eric Waddell of Salina, Michael Waddell of Beloit, Teresa Wrench and husband Steve of Lindsborg, Cindy Grisham and husband Troy of Arlington, Texas; 13 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many friends. Tally Ho.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday at Elmwood Cemetery with Pastor Glenn Fogo and Rod Sutter officiating. Memorials may be given to the VFW Post 6242. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
